When Should You Start SAT Vocabulary Prep?

Plan from the likely test date, current reading needs and school calendar instead of treating one starting grade as a rule.

Start when vocabulary review fits a clear learning need and a realistic schedule. Earlier planning can leave more time for reading and review, but grade 8 or 9 is not a required entry point for every student.

Four things to check

1. Your likely SAT dates and the current testing policies of target institutions.
2. Your present reading and vocabulary gaps, based on actual work.
3. AP, IB or other school assessment deadlines and activities.
4. Time for revisiting words and explaining them in new contexts.

If the test is close

Prioritize the needs shown by recent practice. Do not assume that new words learned within two months are useless or that missing a later app tier creates a fixed score ceiling. Choose achievable work and check whether it addresses the errors you are actually making.

A first week

Use a short routine, record difficult words and their context, and review what remains confusing. The 3,600-word collection offers study material; completing it is not a universal prerequisite to taking the SAT.
