How many words do I need for the digital SAT?
There is no official list, but high-frequency analyses of released digital SAT material consistently land in the low thousands. BARU Vocab uses a 3,600-word set split into three tiers: 1,200 core words (Base Camp) cover the bulk of Reading & Writing vocabulary questions, 1,600 more (Ascent) cover harder passages, and a final 800 (Summit) target top-score discrimination. If you only master Tier 1, you are already functional; 1500+ scorers typically need all three.
How does the digital SAT actually test vocabulary?
Mostly through Words in Context questions: a short passage with a blank or an underlined word, asking which choice keeps the logical meaning. Pure definition recall is rare — you need the definition plus the word's behavior in context. That is why every BARU Vocab entry pairs a definition with a real example sentence rather than a synonym list.
Is cramming 100 words a day better than 20 a day?
For long-run retention, no — with one exception noted below. Massed learning inflates day-one recall and collapses within a week; spaced repetition with a bounded daily dose keeps review load sustainable and pushes words into long-term memory. BARU Vocab fixes the dose at 20 new words plus scheduled reviews — about 5 to 10 minutes — because the habit surviving 90 days matters more than any single day's volume. Do the words in this app actually show up on the real SAT?
The overlap is high by construction, not by luck. There is no official College Board word list, so BARU Vocab's 3,600 entries were assembled by frequency: the vocabulary that recurs across released and publicly available digital SAT material, ranked and cut into three tiers. That means the words you meet here are the ones the exam keeps reusing — Tier 1 covers the routine Reading & Writing vocabulary, Tier 3 the low-frequency academic words that separate top scores. No list can promise every word on your specific test form, and the exam tests usage in context rather than bare definitions, which is why each entry carries a real example sentence. The practical check is simple: after a full official practice test, mark the words you did not know and see how many were already in the deck.
When should I start SAT vocabulary?
Earlier than the test-prep phase. Korean international-school counselors increasingly point students toward grades 8–9 for SAT foundations, because grade 11 is crowded with AP or IB, GPA, activities and applications. Vocabulary is the most start-early-friendly component: 20 words a day from grade 9 finishes a 3,600-word cycle in about six months, before intensive prep even begins.
Etymology or context — which memorization method works?
Both, matched to the word. Latin/Greek roots compress families of academic words; opaque or idiomatic words stick better through vivid context and memory hooks.
